The Australia Poker Championships better known as the Aussie Millions will begin on Jan 17 and finish on Feb 5.
This two and a half week poker festival is one of the most popular poker tournaments in the Asia-Pacific region and attracts top poker players from all over the world.
As usual, Aussie Millions will take place at the Crown Melbourne casino and the organizers have once again brought back Jason Somerville to stream the final three days of the main event on his Twitch channel ‘runitup’.
The organizers have also raised their satellite tournament numbers this year and have given away 400 seats to the $10,600 Main Event which takes place on Jan 28. The 2017 Aussie Millions Main Event saw the largest attendance of its two-decade history. As many as 725 players registered for the Main Event and the competition was fierce.
Poker pro Shurane Vijayaram ended up winning the Main Event and received a lot of attention as he managed to turn his $130 buy-in at a satellite tournament into an AUS$ 1.6 million win. To make his victory even sweeter, the Main Event win also happened to be his first-ever live tournament cash-in.
Crown Resorts
Crown Melbourne increased the number of satellite events to the $10,600 Main Event in order to give poker pros who cannot afford the buy-in an opportunity to win a seat to this high-stakes event. Crown Melbourne started running satellite events from March 2017 to give poker pros enough time to secure a seat and prepare to travel to Melbourne for the Aussie Millions.
Crown Melbourne A new innovation for the 2017-2018 season was the introduction of ‘Four of a Kind’ satellite tournaments. Crown Melbourne ran these special satellites which allowed players to not just win a seat in the main event but to all four Championships. The casino also introduced three separate ‘Aussie Millions Warm-Up Weeks’ to increase the number of qualifiers for the main event. Each of these satellite events had different buy-in levels to enable as many poker players as possible to take part.
Crown Melbourne has one last bonanza for those who want seats to the Main Event. Three weekly $550 satellites that guarantee 10 seats each are being conducted. The first one concluded on Jan 7 and two more will follow.
