Jarrod Thatcher Creates History as First Aussie to Win GUKPT Main Event

It’s been an amazing weekend for Jarrod Thatcher as he became the first Australian player to ever win a Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Main Event. He did that by topping a field of 390 players in the 2022 GUKPT London Main Event for a first-place prize worth £87,530, which is also the biggest score of his career.

Thatcher’s latest victory has brought his total live tournament earnings to more than $600,000. The Australian poker pro has been competing in major tournaments in his home country for the past six years and has won quite a few titles, including the 2017 Melbourne Poker Championships Main Event which gave him his previous biggest score of $80,086.

According to his Hendon Mob profile, Thatcher also won events in The Star Casino Recurring Tournaments, Club Macaroni Poker Palace Recurring Tournaments, the World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) International – Sydney, and Autumn Championships Sydney.

Final Table Results

Nine players made it to the final table and it was Alex T who busted first in 9th place for £6,020. He was followed to the rail by “Tallah” who finished 8th for £7.050. Next to go was Anthony Hughes who collected £8,260 for his 7th-place finish. Rafa Naves ended his run in 6th place with £11,350 in winnings, while Kim Abramovici settled for 5th, taking home £15,480.

Patrick Donohue also bowed out of the game, placing 4th for £23,730. Heads-up play was set following the exit of Gabriel Ene who walked away with £37,150 for finishing 3rd.

Thatcher battled it out with “I.E.” from Spain during the final stage of the tournament. In the last hand, Thatcher moved all-in with jack-six and I.E. called with king-seven of spades. Thatcher made his victory official when he flopped and turned a jack. His Spanish opponent walked away with a £61,230 payout for finishing 2nd.

GUKPT’s Next Stop – Reading

The GUKPT has completed six stops so far this year and its next destination will be Reading where it will host an eight-day series running from July 17 to 24. The main highlight will once again be the GUKPT £1,000 Main Event which kicks off on July 21. Multiple Main Event winners have so far been crowned this year, including Tom Hall (Luton stop), Trevor Reardon (Manchester) and Gary Armstrong (Edinburgh).
